Advanced Technology

All manufacturing facilities utilize the silicothermic manufacturing process, sometimes referred to as the "pidgeon process".
The pidgeon process makes use of ferrosilicon to reduce magnesium oxide in a molten slag at temperatures of 1200ºC-1600ºC under a reduced gas pressure above the slag to produce a magnesium vapor.

The pidgeon process offers several advantages including reduced costs, shorter production cycles, and a more environmentally friendly production method when compared with the alternative electrolysis production method. Click here to learn the pidgeon process in detail.

Each production facilities also make use of the advanced High Temperature Air Combustion/ Highly Preheated Air Combustion technology (HTAC/HPAC), also known as the "flameless combustion" technology.  This technology substantially reduces furnace gas consumption, improves thermal efficiency, and decreases the emission of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide gases. Compared with traditional furnaces, the new, reduced regenerative combustion furnace can save energy by greater than 50%.  Our Vice Chairman and CEO Mr. Yuwei Huang was among the first in his industry peer group to recognize the benefit of HTAC/HPAC and adopted this technology at all of the facilities.  For his efforts in the use of "flameless combustion" technology for the production of magnesium, Mr. Huang received an "Energy Star Award" from the China Non-Ferrous Metals Industry Associatiom.
